Bertha, who may be chosen for the position of headmistress, is advised by the retiring headmistress to lighten up. Cicely is persuaded by daughter Mary Fytte, a student at the school, to take Bertha's place until she can be made to see reason and brought back - she is assured this is only a 24 hour stint.

However, it turns out that Bertha has gone to Africa, and Cicely's tenure as schoolmistress will last longer than planned. The girls seem to like the new and somewhat nutty approach to education taken by who they believe to be a now light-hearted Bertha.

Needless to say many, possibly embarrassing complications ensue - but Cicely manages to dance between the raindrops and all works out well, and she even winds up with a lover. All-in-all, a delightful romp. The other actors are good, the schoolgirls are attractive, particularly Vivien Leigh with one line in her first movie.
